Layer Your Coat

During the brisk months ahead, It’s recommended that you build your outfit around your outerwear. To show you how it’s done, I’m peeling back the layers of 7 different coat-centric looks.

layercoat-3

A bold evening coat looks great with a cocktail dress, but try taking it out of its element with a pair of worn-in boyfriend jeans and a knit cap.

Alice + Olivia Shawl Collar Coat ($898); Joe’s Jeans Tux Tee Shirt ($88); Big Star Rolled Slim Jeans ($142); Gap Chevron Hat ($20); Loeffler Randall Rider Bag($650); Bruno Magli Kitten Heels ($595).

layercoat-1

A sleeveless plaid coat serves as an excellent layering piece over a jacket. Balance the coat’s longer length with a sleek biker jacket that rests at the hips.

Phillip Lim Cape Vest ($895); Phillip Lim Biker Jacket ($1,695); Chaser Tank ($60); Blank NYC Skinny Jeans ($88); BCBG MAXAZRIA Knit Hat ($68); Annelise Michelson Necklace ($420); Rag & Bone Pilot Bag ($925); Dolce Vita Quid Heels ($209).

layercoat-7

The peacoat is an outerwear crowd pleaser, it goes with everything. Since the piece itself is a bit understated, add interest to your look with a mix of textures and prints.

A.L.C. Cannady Peacoat ($795); LOFT Stripe Sweater Tee ($40); Joe’s Jeans Dandy Woven Shirt ($168); Lover Mini Skirt ($400); A.P.C.Chain Strap Bag ($620); HUE Opaque Tights ($14); Giuseppe Zanotti Boots ($1,895).

The long and short of it: an ankle-grazing coat functions as the perfect balance for a minidress and combat boots.

Mara Hoffman Coat (similar style here); Guess Denim Skirtall($108); Rag & Bone Marigold Top ($290); The 2 Bandits Wharf Earrings ($128); Rachel Zoe Montana Backpack ($395); Burberry Silk Scarf ($495, similar style here); HUE Luster Tights ($14); Rag & Bone Boots ($595).

layercoat-2

Pink is the new black, so treat this fuzzy coat as a neutral with washed-out skinny jeans and a muted plaid shirt.

H&M Coat ($149); Equipment Cardigan ($318); April, May Top ($209, similar style here); McGuire Boyfriend Jeans ($218, 877.746.7267, similar style here); The Elder Statesman Cashmere Beanie ($270); DKNY Crossbody Bag ($265, similar style here); Paul Smith Loafers ($437).

layercoat-4

The quickest way to toughen up a menswear coat: add a biker vest on top. To further the look’s no holds barred vibe, throw on a sheer lace blouse and metallic heels.

Tibi Moto Vest ($950, 212.226.5852, similar style here); BLK DNM Coat ($1,195); 7 For All Mankind Lace Top ($218); Triarchy Tie Dye Jeans ($245, similar style here); Gucci  Sunglasses ($345); French Connection Bag ($348); Fendi T-Strap Pumps($1,190).

Cuff your Jeans like a Pro

Here are the formulas behind the season’s must-try looks: the traditional skinny cuff, the undone half cuff, and the polished thick cuff. With these style tips you’re sure to become a cuffing pro!

cuffjeans-thickA thick cuff requires a wider-leg pair of jeans that are a little loose.

Steps: 1. Fold the jeans to create a one-inch cuff. 2. Fold again so that the cuff is about two inches thick. 3. Smooth out the cuff to create a polished look.

Styling Tip: Make this your weekend go-to with a relaxed tee and ankle-strap flats.

cuffjeans-skinnyThe skinny cuff works best on fitted silhouettes, as it creates the appearance of a long, lean line.

Steps: 1. Fold the bottom of the jeans to create a half-inch cuff. 2. Fold a second time, adding an extra half-inch to the cuff. It should be nice and tight and hit at or just above the ankle.

Styling Tip: Elongate your legs further by adding a nude wedge or low-cut heel.

cuffjeans-halfcuffThe half cuff is best suited for slouchier styles like the boyfriend jean.

Steps: 1. To achieve an accordion-like look, start by making a single four-inch cuff. 2. Bunch the bottom of the cuff to create dimension and texture. 3. Finish by folding the top hem downwards.

Styling Tip: Give your jeans the downtown treatment by adding a worn-in jacket and statement stilettos.

Are you Cuffing your Jeans?

Glitter for Grown-Ups!

glitterForGrownUps

Glitter is best when emphasized in one area. For example “If your eye shadow has glitter, skip the flecks in your gloss.”

Makeup Stylist for the Stars, Janice Daoud’s pick is Nars’ Andy Warhol Soft Touch Pencil ($24) in Silver Factory. The brand’s soft pencils are easy to use and layer. “Apply to the lid then add any light-reflecting shadow on top,” she says. M.A.C.’s Pressed Pigment ($21) in Deeply Dashing turns the silver warm and subtle, while Laura Geller’s Baked Eyeshadow ($24) in Stainless Teal is party-ready. Want more options? Lancome’s Color Design Palette ($49) in Violet Magnetique boasts five colors and built-in directions for building a vivid smoky eye.

Hard Candy might not be packing plastic heart rings anymore, but its devotion to sparkle is still unmatched. Try rimming your eyes with their Take Me Out Eyeliner ($5) in Truffle or Handcuffs for a light-catching cat-eye. Not wild enough? Sephora’s Deco Daze Glitter Eyeliner Appliques ($5) are even easier to apply and come in gold, silver, and purple.

If you’d rather stick to flecks of gold on your lips, there’s no shortage of glitter-infused gloss on the market. Dolce & Gabbana’s Ultra-Shine Lipgloss ($29) in Pink Diamond looks purple but goes on clear, while Bobbi Brown’s High Shimmer Lip Gloss ($23) in Oyster turns frosty. Le Metier de Beaute’s Sheer Brilliance Lip Gloss ($32) in Orange Juiced does deliver a sheer orange tint. If those aren’t actually glittery enough, take the Violent Lips plunge. Their Temporary Lip Tattoos ($7) come in almost every color imaginable (even ombre!) and should stay on all night. There are three per pack, just in case.

Get on the glitter nail polish bandwagon. These are some sparkly picks: Deborah Lippmann’s Nail Lacquer ($18) in Let’s Go Crazy, Butter London’s Nail Polish ($14) in Fiddlesticks. Want chunkier glitter? Topshop’s Nails ($10) in Beleza has silver flecks in blue polish while China Glaze’s Nail Polish ($5) in Techno is as holographic as it sounds.
